In our previous news we talked about the behaviors resulting from the way we designed our organization and from the strategic decisions we took. The next step is about monitoring. We want to ensure that the organization, for example your management team or your execution team at work, or perhaps your Run Mate by Core-Lean team is on the right track. In case of deviations against what is expected, we would like to know early enough to be able to react, analyze and adjust what is required. It’s important to detect deviations early because the longer we take to realize a deviation the bigger is the impact on our goal… just imagine that one of your Mates takes the wrong path! The earlier she/he realizes it the less she/he has to run in addition due to this event.
There are two feedback loops we have to take care of:
a) The first one is to monitor if we are delivering against the goals we set. For example, monitor that our Mates run at the pace each one committed. This will ensure the total time (our goal) is within our reach.
b) The second one is even more important, and this is the relevance of our goals for the environment. For example, let’s assume that once the race started, your team gets informed that the organization will shut down the arrival after 21 hours. WOW!! All what you planned for is not anymore what is expected, your goal of 23h is not in line with the prize or the reward promised anymore.
Yes, in the example of the Run Mate by Core-Lean it sounds weird that the total time goal changed in the middle of the race. However, in the real business world the expectations of the client may also change in the middle of a project. For example, consumers prefer now zero-pollutant products and packaging, or competition is reaching better levels of performance than your company so they can offer better products faster, more reliably and even cheaper. The client is always right! In order not to lose perspective of the environment around teams and organizations it’s important to monitor on a continuous basis that your goals and purpose satisfy a real need of your market and/or consumers. This is why you must pay attention to both feedback loops – the first one tells us if you are doing the things right; the second one if you are doing the right things.
At Core Lean, we use different mechanisms to monitor our results. We want to know if we are delivering - together with our clients the expected growth of skills and competences in their organizations to get outstanding results. That we measure in different ways: the performance, the autonomy of their teams, and the development of internal coaches to continue by themselves in the future.
Similarly, we also connect with our clients in different ways to understand their needs and be able to fulfill them. One example was a session with some of our key clients to get their open feedback on what they want from us. One of the results is the Leadership Lab – A program to develop leadership competencies and organizational understanding for their leaders - which is taking place just before Run Mate by Core-Lean in Montreux… and Run Mate by Core-Lean is a beautiful connection with what we do: teamwork, achievement, growth, celebration.
So, are you already clear on what, how and who is going to monitor your performance in Run Mate by Core-Lean? Great! Enjoy the moment and look forward to our next article!
