Run Mate: The first relay race around Lake Geneva!

It’s finally here! Many had imagined it, others had dreamt of it, Run Mate is making it happen! On the 28thand 29th of September 2019, you will be able to run a relay race around the Lac Léman! Starting and finishing in Vevey, come join the adventure this September!

Open to teams of 6 to 9 runners, or 2 to 5 runners for the Ultra version, each “Mate” can run multiple relay legs around the lake, to help their team complete the full loop! Each team is free to organise their relay legs as they wish in order to complete over 200km of running. The breath-taking route promises a number of memorable moments and incredible viewpoints, as participants get to appreciate the beauty of this Franco-Swiss course around the lake. In total, 29 communes in the cantons of Vaud, Valais and Geneva as well as the French department of Haute-Savoie will host relay points along the route.

The course will be divided into approximately 30 relay legs of various different distances and difficulties. Team members can alternate as they wish throughout the course, exchanging their runner at the relay points of their choice. The rest of the team drive by van/car to the next relay point whilst one of their team members runs, cheering them on in the process. On top of race around the lake, a number of non-running based challenges will take place throughout the event, based around the culture of the Lac Léman. Competitions will also take place for clubs, companies, groups and students (with organisers offering a special entry fee for the latter).

The adventure will take place over 2 days and 1 night. The start will be given in Vevey on the Saturday (exact start time still TBC depending on times predicted by registered teams). All “Mates” will get to experience something unique as they run into the sunset on the Saturday evening and out of the darkness during sunrise on the Sunday morning. The race will finish once again in Vevey on the Sunday, with the achievements of participants marked by a big post-race party and barbecue.

Elina Leimgrumber, Union Member of the city of Vevey, declared: “It’s an honour and with a great sense of pride that the city of Vevey welcomes the first edition of this relay run race around our beautiful lake. We would like to wish a warm welcome to the organisers as well as all the participants of Run Mate. The event perfectly embodies the slogan of our current legislation: ‘Vevey, a city that moves!’

Event Director, Benjamin Chandelier, also stated: “We are very happy to be able to offer the first relay run race around the Lac Léman. It’s an event that crosses borders and that will unite participants through the common challenge and allow them to discover or rediscover the beauty of this incredible region. Whether it be the lake itself, the history, the culture, the forests or the mountains, we will all get to appreciate it together.”

We would like to thank the city of Vevey for their confidence and for welcoming the first edition, as well as all the communes who will be hosting a relay point throughout the event. Without their cooperation this event wouldn’t have been possible!”

Registrations will open from April, with an early-bird registration fee in effect until the 18th of June at midnight. Head to www.runmate.org right now to register for the waiting list!
